Abstract

Employing FBG based transducers, a full-scale wind turbine blade manufactured by the company Aeroblade Inc. has been monitored. Starting from a high precision strain transducer, a strain patch has been designed to be installed on the structure surface (as in commercial systems). Employing a total of 15 strain patches, a sensor system capable of retrieving the strain distribution of a loaded structure has been experimentally verified during 4 loading tests. All sensing patches have been distributed into three critical areas to evaluate the wind turbine blade response. The final tests exhibit a great linearity and repeatability proving the feasibility of applying FBG-based sensing technology in this field of application..
