Satellite Retrieval of Percent Liquid Water in Tropical Clouds Between −20° and −38°C

Abstract

A method for estimating the fraction of liquid water using the 11 and 12 micron MODIS channels is described. The mean liquid fraction at −20°C was ~ 10%, strongly affecting cloud optical properties.
