Physics, technology, and applications of X-ray free-electron lasers

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Free-electron lasers, can produce femtosecond pulses of coherent 0.1nm X-rays, with peak power of ten Gwatt, opening novel ways of exploring atomic and molecular systems. We review the physics and technology of these lasers, and of the projects to build them.
