Abstract

Future networks may employ rate adaptation, extending reach where regeneration is unavailable. Transmission using fixed symbol rate, variable constellation (PM-16/8/4-QAM) and variable-rate FEC codes yields bit rates of 200/100/50 Gbit/s over distances of 650/2000/3000 km.
