Direct, efficient coupling into slow light photonic crystal waveguide: role of evanescent modes

Abstract

Efficient coupling between fast and slow PC waveguide modes is possible if strong evanescent modes are needed to match the fields across the interface. This occurs when the propagating modes have substantially different modal fields.
