Abstract

We describe a model for signal propagation in multimode fibers, including coherent spatial- and polarization-mode coupling. The model explains the dependence of the impulse response on launched polarization. In the low-coupling regime (e.g., glass fibers), differential group delays (DGDs) scale linearly with fiber length, while in the high-coupling regime (e.g., plastic fibers), DGDs scale as the square-root of length.
