Abstract

Thin colloidal crystals of silica spheres develop cracks when they are utilized to obtain photonic band-gap crystals. By sintering silica spheres prior to assembly of the crystal these cracks can be avoided. A large temperature dependence of the refractive index of the silica spheres may allow tuning their refractive index.
