Abstract

Much of the work, to date, on photonic crystal lasers has focused on suspended membrane structures [1]. These suspended membranes do not dissipate heat effectively however, and the demonstrated lasers are limited to pulsed operation under short duty cycles. CW operation will require a much more thermally conductive substrate [2]. Here we report on room temperature lasing in small photonic crystal cavities on sapphire under long duty cycle pulsed conditions.
