Abstract

Exceptionally large electro-optic coefficients in single-crystal film of DAST (4’-dimethylamino-N-methyl-4-stilbazolium tosylate) have been reported.[1] Electro-optic modulation at a high speed (1.5 GHz) using DAST single-crystal film has been recently measured.[2] The magnitude of r11 as measured at 720 nm is 530 pm/V. In this paper, we discuss results of electroabsorption measurements in DAST single-crystal film, along with electro-optic measurement at 1.55 microns. Electroabsorption in various materials including conjugated polymers such as polydiacetylene and multiple quantum wells was previously reported. However, electroabsorption in materials having linear electro-optic effect was not reported earlier. Electroabsorption in electro-optic materials is due to the imaginary part of the electro-optic coefficient.
