Colloidal clusters: Building blocks for photonic materials

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

A method for fabricating colloidal clusters of tetrahedra, octahedra, and other clusters is described. Such clusters are used to form a new class of colloidal particles with directional interactions. These can be used to greatly expand the types of colloidal crystals that can be self-assembled for photonic band gap materials.
