Efficient semi-analytical modeling of passively mode-locked lasers

Abstract

The modeling of mode-locked fiber laser dynamics is usually undertaken through the numerical simulations of the field propagation equations. This relatively lengthy procedure hampers the efficient survey of the parameter space of the laser cavity, which can be sought to optimize the cavity with respect to prescribed pulse features (e.g. pulse energy, duration, bandwidth) within a given range of pulse dynamics. As an alternative, it is possible to develop semi-analytical modeling from a collective-coordinate approach (CCA) [1]. The basic idea of the CCA is to replace the partial-differential equations governing the propagation of light in the passive and active fibers of the cavity, by a set of first-order ordinary differential equation describing directly the evolution of the pulse parameters.
