Abstract
The concept of a traditional laser exploits a cavity with single or multiple resonant modes, and their coherent amplification in a feedback structure. With this contribution we endeavor to investigate a new concept in laser design, where lasing does not result from a cavity or a resonance, but conversely occurs in a system that is totally dark, i.e., a black-body. In thermodynamic equilibrium, a black-body emits the same amount of energy that is able to absorb, and behaves as an ideal thermal incoherent source. A particular intriguing question concerns the possibility of achieving coherent lasing emission, which can combine the high efficiency of the process of stimulated light amplification with the large emission of a black-body material.
