Consistency Properties of a Chaotic Laser to Input Pulse Trains

Abstract

Consistency is the ability of a dynamical system to respond, after some transients, in a similar way to similar external drive inputs despite of their different initial conditions [1]. This phenomenon is crucial for the understanding of dynamical systems in which reproducibility of responses plays a role, ranging from photonic systems to neural networks. Moreover, information processing techniques, like reservoir computing, depend on consistency properties to guarantee the reliability of its performance [2]. In reservoir computing, a dynamical system is transiently perturbed starting from a steady state and leading to a steady state. However, in biological systems the initial state is rather dynamical than a fixed point or a regular state. Here, we investigate the consistency of responses of a chaotic laser subject to external modulation in the form of electrical pulses. Depending on the pulse position within the modulation sequence, consistent or inconsistent responses can be observed. We estimate their degree of consistency calculating ensemble correlations.
