Strong atom-light interaction in near-concentric optical resonators

Abstract

The usual approach to obtain strong atom-light coupling in CQED (Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics) is to trap atoms inside high finesse cavities with small physical volume [1]. An alternative method is to use a near-concentric cavity with strong focusing modes [2]. We present an unique millimetre scale near-concentric cavity-lens design which is able to obtain small mode volume of ≈104λ3 and a vacuum Rabi frequency (g0/2π=350MHz), few times larger than other micro-scale cavities [3]. Hence, the design is able to the reduce the requirement of high finesse usually imposed upon the cavity mirrors to obtain strong coupling. Particularly, for a Rubidium atom located at the center of the cavity, we expect to achieve strong single atom-photon coupling cooperativity up to 160 with a moderate finesse of at around 400.
