Rotational state cooling of trapped polyatomic molecules via optical pumping

Abstract

Compared to atoms, molecules possess a multitude of internal states and can in addition carry a permanent electric dipole moment which leads to an anisotropic long range interaction between the molecules. These additional features offer manifold possibilities for experiments in quantum optics such as quantum simulation with dipolar degenerate quantum gases, hybrid quantum devices for quantum information processing or the study of collisions and quantum controlled chemistry [1]. A prerequisite for applications in quantum optics, however, is to gain and maintain control over the internal and external degrees of freedom.
