Abstract
Quantum cryptography allows the users to exchange a key where the security is provable based on the laws of physics. Recent experimental work shows quantum key distribution over 307 km [1] through state-of-the-art optical fibers. In order to significantly increase the communication distance, to 1000 km or beyond, one needs to implement quantum repeaters [2] to overcome the fiber loss limitation. Long-lived (1ms-1s) and multimode quantum memory [3] is a key element for the realization of such a quantum repeater for long distance communication.
