Abstract

The interaction of light and matter at the level of a single quantum has been the subject of many research efforts, and gained momentum during the last decade. This is mainly due to the promising progress in the field but also due to proposals for applications such as quantum repeaters or hybrid quantum communication protocols. For experiments involving single quantum systems and their interaction with light, the figure of merit is the coupling strength that can be realized in the particular system at hand.
