Study of the Optical turbulence and the scintillometer in AIOFM

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

The structure function parameter of the refractive index , which described the statistical characteristics of the random refractive index fluctuations and mainly related to the optical wave propagation in the atmosphere, is usually named as the optical turbulence. Some technologies and comparison experiments for measuring in situ or sensing remotely the optical turbulence were introduced in this paper, which were developed in Anhui Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (AIOFM), China from 90s in the 20th century. In those experiments, the micro thermometer sensors, the primary instrument for measuring the structure function parameter of the temperature , and the Differential Image Motion Monitor (DIMM), the fundamental instrument for measuring the integral strength of the optical turbulence, were deployed along the same optical propagation path with the scintillometer. The results obtained from the 500m, 1000m and 6800m propagating conditions were analyzed in detail, and the discrepancies of the measuring results between the different instruments were observed. Some methods and limitations were proposed to improve the application of the scintillometer.
