Kirchhoff's approximation in diffractive optics

Abstract

Kirchhoff's approximation is reviewed and applied to standard problems of diffractive optics. Despite a consistent definition the range of validity varies significantly depending on the application. Kirchhoff's approximation is also compared with alternative diffraction models.
