Projection-type real mode integral imaging system using convex mirror array with three-dimensional screen

Abstract

This paper presents a projection-type real mode integral imaging system using a convex mirror array with a three-dimensional (3D) screen composed of a lens array and a retroreflector. When it comes to space efficiency, the convex mirror array has an advantage for the optical system. And the ease of fabrication of the convex mirror array compared to the transmissive lens array facilitates various system designs on demand. The real mode integral imaging scheme can be achieved by the projecting a virtual elemental image behind the convex mirror array, which cannot be realized with display devices except projectors. The 3D screen relives the visible limitation caused by the small exit pupil of the projector, preserving the parallax of the 3D images. The experiment to demonstrate the proposed system and its results are also presented.
