When 3D holographic display meets with nanotechnology

Abstract

3D holographic display is highly sought-after goal of researchers because it will provide us full depth clue of 3D objects. However, several main problems hinder its further commercial application, including huge amount of calculation for computer generated hologram(CGH), speckle noise caused by the coherent light source, and the dynamic opto-opto or electro-opto modulator. The first issue could be alleviated by the developing hardware and software of the computer, as well as the calculation algorithms of the CGH. The speckle noise could be relieved by the partial coherent light source and the spatial- or temporal- average techniques. The dynamic modulator which requires nano-scale pixlated size and nano- or pico- second response time is still under consideration. The developing nano-optics especially metasurface is a good candidate to meet this requirement. This talk will first review the current solutions for various nano-pixelated modulators, and then it will focus on how it is applied to static 3D holographic display. Finally, it will propose a 3D holographic display based on dynamic nano-pixelated modulator made of metasurface for the first time.
