Breaking Through the Wavelength Barrier: State-of-play on Rare-earth Ion Mid-infrared Fiber Lasers at 4-9 µm

Abstract

Fiber lasing at 3.9 µm was reported in 1995, but has not yet been demonstrated at 4 µm or longer wavelengths. Rare-earth-ion behavior in low optical-phonon energy hosts is appraised and host confounding issues explored.
