Waveguide-to-waveguide directional coupling beyond a free space wavelength

Abstract

We investigate the use of integrated zero-index metamaterials in directional coupling. Ring resonators incorporating these materials exhibit critical coupling over larger separations than is possible with evanescent coupling, even exceeding the free space wave-length.
