Terahertz-induced optical birefringence in liquid water

Abstract

We have observed optical birefringence in neat water induced by single-cycle intense terahertz pulses. The refractive index changes are explained by the electronic polarizability modulated by molecular orientation driven by the strong terahertz electric field.
