The Impact of Thermal Mode Instability on Core Diameter Scaling in High-Power Fiber Amplifiers

Abstract

Detailed simulations reveal that the threshold for thermal mode instability decreases for increasing core diameter in step-index fiber amplifiers. The threshold for 50-µm fiber cores is 37% lower than that of 20-µm fiber cores.
