Abstract

Here we probe the ultimate nonlocal limit of “threshold-free” Cherenkov radiation in hyperbolic metamaterials. The nonlocality, induced by the spatial dispersion from the inhomogeneous structure and the electron screening, determines a nonzero Cherenkov threshold.
