Abstract

We present first-principles calculations for saturable absorption in graphite based on time-dependent density functional theory. Solving time-dependent Kohn-Sham equation for bulk graphite under a strong and ultrashort electric field, we have succeeded to investigate the temporal behavior of saturable absorption without any empirical parameters. It is found that the saturation takes place for ultrashort pulses of intensities stronger than 1010W/cm2, in good agreement with observation. Mechanisms leading to the saturation is discussed from microscopic viewpoints.
