What are the merits of hyperbolic metamaterials?

Abstract

Detailed analysis of hyperbolic metamaterials shows that Purcell enhancement attainable in them is negated by loss, slow velocity and impedance mismatch. These materials offer no advantage whatsoever relative to simple slab and gap plasmonic waveguides.
