Rayleigh’s Criterion is Irrelevant to the Localization of Two Incoherent Optical Point Sources

Abstract

Using the quantum Cramér-Rao bound, we prove that Rayleigh’s criterion is fundamentally irrelevant to the estimation of the separation between two incoherent optical sources. We also propose measurement schemes that attain the bound.
