Abstract

An optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) is a device most commonly used in measurements of optical fiber cables and diagnosis of optical network’s condition. It is also considered the most versatile fiber-measuring instrument. It can be used both for quality control of cables on drums and after deployment in the network, providing accurate information about the fiber length and attenuation, insertion losses, physical damages etc. In this work we present a proof-of-the-concept miniaturized reflectometer realized in a photonic integration technology on InP platform. The principle of the OTDR’s operation is based on sending a series of light pulses and analyzing the returning optical signals resulting from the Rayleigh scattering and reflections from fiber connectors, splices etc. [1]. The main advantage of the OTDR technique is the ability to perform optical link diagnostics with access to a single end of the fiber only. OTDRs enable measurements of physical quantities such as the length of the tested link, attenuation of optical fibers, insertion losses introduced by connectors, splices and splitters as well as detection of damages and mechanical deformations.
