Abstract
The X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) has revolutionized X-ray science, enhancing the peak X-ray brightness by ten orders of magnitude. XFELs share many properties of conventional lasers, such as high-intensity, transverse coherence and the possibility to generate ultrashort pulses.
