Bright Synchrotron Radiation from Nano-forest Targets

Abstract

The interaction of intense ultra-short laser pulses with nano-structured solid density target surfaces has been considered for enhanced hot electron generation [1] and consequent ion acceleration [2]. The efficient transfer and acceleration of electrons deep into the overdense plasma is possible if the prohibiting magnetic instabilities are eliminated and if the interaction region is much longer than the plasma skin depth. This can be realized using nano-forest targets made of nanorods (or nanowires), with diameter of 100 nm, grown on a metal surface and separated by several microns [3]. An intense laser pulse propagating along these wires extracts electrons and accelerates them to high energies. The remaining positive charge in the wire triggers a return current driven by cold electrons, which can be seen in Fig .1. The hot electrons, undergoing betatron oscillations around the wires, are highly relativistic and emit intense synchrotron radiation.
