Abstract
Dual order bidirectional Raman amplification are preferred over first order counterpart due to their lower signal power variation (SPV) and consequently superior optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR) performance [1]. These benefits are counteracted by the disadvantage of relative intensity noise (RIN) transfer from forward pumps to signal [1,2]. In this work, we demonstrate a forward pumping scheme which uses a broadband 1st order seed and 2nd order bidirectional pumping. This configuration performs better than other conventional 1st order forward pumped schemes, reducing the signal RIN to a level comparable with backward only pumping.
