Abstract
Engineering optical actuators with increased performance is a subject of continuous research. Small footprint, low energy consumption, high retention, and low insertion losses are some of the aspects involved in the optimization. Many approaches in this direction have been recently explored, possibly involving new waveguiding concepts (like plasmons) or switching materials (such as phase change solids) [1].
