Ultra-small mode volume cavities for the enhancement of Nitrogen-vacancy center fluorescence

Abstract

We apply tunable optical microcavities [1,2] as a versatile tool to enhance the emission rate and to increase the photon collection efficiency of nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond. The coupling between the emitter and the cavity mode can be expressed by the Purcell factor being proportional to the ratio of an effective quality factor and the mode volume [3]. Since the effective quality factor is limited by the emission spectrum of the NV center, we aim at minimizing the mode volume in order to boost the Purcell enhancement.
