Abstract
Rare-earth-doped waveguide lasers have shown significant promise for silicon photonics lasers for their inexpensive, straightforward, and monolithic integration methods [1,2]. In an effort to reduce the device size and threshold, high quality factor whispering gallery mode cavities have been shown in microtoroid and microdisk lasers [3]. However, such lasers require external fiber coupling and total isolation on the chip surface. In this paper, we report a novel integration scheme to demonstrate a true monolithic, sub-milliwatt threshold and single-mode erbium and ytterbium laser operation by 980 nm pump. Furthermore, we discuss the potential of pulley-coupled design for 1480 nm pump for erbium-doped microring laser.
