Abstract

Cavity optomechanical systems allow strong optical forces and extremely sensitive measurements of displacement. These can be used to create ultracompact force and mass sensors, as well as for fundamental investigations into quantum measurement and measurement-based control [1,2]. Optomechanical effects can in particular be very strong when optical and mechanical resonances are co-localized at the nanoscale [3]. The photon-phonon interaction strength is most universally described by g0 = (∂ωc/∂x)xzpf, which is the change of an optical resonance frequency ωc due to a displacement x equal to the size of the resonator’s zero-point fluctuations xZPF.
