Abstract

Recently, a new type of interferometer fibre optic gyroscope (IFOG) called the photonic crystal fibre (PCF) IFOG has been considered effective for reducing the nonreciprocal error [1]. However, the transmission loss which is caused by the randomly back-scattering in both the hollow-core photonic crystal fibre (HC-PCF) and the solid-core polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fibre (PM-PCF) is much higher [2] [3]. The refractive index difference in the air-silica interface and the mode field mismatch between the pigtail of the modulator and the PCF also induce higher level of back-reflected light. Therefore, a more accurate noise model for PCF IFOG which takes the back-reflection and backscattering noise into account should be investigated.
