45° tilted gratings for silica-based integrated polarizers

Abstract

Polarizers are important components for optical fiber systems and conventional fiber polarizers usually employ bulk optics. To reduce complexity and cost, true in-line polarizers, where the mode does not leave the fiber have been investigated. One platform is tilted grating-based devices, which in fiber have demonstrated a polarization extinction ratio (PER) in excess of 30dB [1]. In integrated optics, polarizers principally rely upon metallic over-layers which can be lossy. Analogous tilted grating-based integrated polarizers promise a low-loss route to scalable and more robust components. We will report on a novel study and demonstration of a broadband silica-based integrated polarizer operating in the C-band.
