Spectral Broadening and Peak Power Limitations of Normally Dispersive Photonic Crystal Fibres for High-Power fs Light Sources

Abstract

The damage threshold of photonic crystal fibres (PCF) is frequently stated to be peak power dependent due to the inset of self-focussing [1]. On contrary, investigations with ps pulses in [2] show that this effect plays only a decisive role for large fibre core diameters while the damage threshold is mainly peak irradiance (Ipeak) dependent for smaller core diameters. The upper limitations for these two quantities are highly relevant for spectral broadening experiments since the peak power limit determines the maximal pulse energy which can be sent through a fibre while the peak irradiance limit determines the spectral broadening factor that can be approximated to be proportional to Ipeak for Fourier limited pulses [3]. The investigations presented in this work were performed with 250 fs, 1.2 μJ emerging from a Kerr-lens mode-locked Yb:YAG thin-disk (TD) oscillator [4]. Therefore, they are in particular interesting for fs high-power light sources that emit pulses with peak powers of up to 15 MW, like mode-locked TD lasers, fibre and innoslab amplifiers.
