Abstract

Observation of the spatial distribution of biologically relevant molecules in living cells or body tissues is very important in basic life science research, particularly for medical application [1]. In general, pharmaceutical drugs are often lightweight molecules, and the distribution of such drug molecules is difficult to measure. The purpose of the present study is to acquire a three-dimensional distribution image by visualizing a biologically active agent in an aqueous environment without molecular labeling. We have developed a phase-sensitive Coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) spectroscopy for detection and identification of small molecules, which is capable of simultaneous measurement of the broadband Raman spectrum while maintaining a high frequency resolution [2].
