Cherenkov-Type Electro-Optic Sampling of Terahertz Waves in a GaAs Crystal

Abstract

Electro-optic (EO) sampling is an established technique for detecting temporal waveforms of terahertz pulses. In conventional EO sampling scheme, the probe optical pulse co-propagates with the terahertz pulse inside an EO crystal and experiences a change of polarization due to the Pockels effect. The efficiency of EO sampling depends on the velocity mismatch between the optical pulse and terahertz waves. In particular, the crystal thickness should be smaller than the minimum coherence length for the frequencies from the pulse spectrum. For example, to measure terahertz pulse of a 3 THz bandwidth with 1.56 µm wavelength laser pulses in a GaAs crystal, the crystal thickness should be smaller than 1 mm [1]. The small thickness limits the detection sensitivity, which is potentially high for GaAs due to its low terahertz absorption.
