Self-limiting property of terahertz generation by optical rectification using tilted-pulse-fronts

Abstract

Broadband terahertz (THz) generation by optical rectification (OR) using tilted-pulse-fronts (TPF) in lithium niobate has resulted in very high optical-to-THz conversion efficiencies [1]. While conversion efficiencies in excess of 10% have been predicted [2], the best demonstrations are ~ 2 %. Here, this disparity is explained by showing that OR using TPF generated by diffraction gratings is a self-limiting process. The finding is supported by experiments [1,3] and theory considering the simultaneous evolution of optical and THz fields [4].
