Abstract
We present a systematic study of novel multi-section distributed feedback (DFB) lasers with laterally coupled ridge waveguide (LC-RWG) surface gratings. The dual-mode behavior in terms of mode stability, balance, and spectral separation has been experimentally studied. The results correspond to the ones obtained from simulations employing a time-domain travelling-wave (TDTW) model [1]. The simulations provide valuable information on the longitudinal carrier and photon density variations and give new insights into the dual-mode dynamics observed in the measured devices.
