Abstract

High-power kHz pulse repetition frequency (RF) ps lasers are widely required as a pump source for mid-IR few-cycle OPCPA systems. One of the main applications of the latter is phase-matched high-harmonic generation [1]. Media doped with Yb ions are frequently used to create high energy and average power lasers due to low quantum defect (~9%), rather long lifetime (~1 ms) and good thermo-optical properties [2]. Cooling the active elements (AE) to cryogenic temperatures considerably increases the gain and absorption cross sections and improves the thermooptical constants of the medium [3]. A project to create a cryogenic Yb:YAG disk laser is underway at the Institute of Applied Physics, Russian Academy of Sciences. The laser consists of three units: a master oscillator (MO), mJ first preamplifier (FPA), dozens of mJ preamplifier (PA) and hundreds of mJ main amplifier (MA) [4]. It is planned to create a laser system with pulse energy of ~0.5 J and pulse RF of ~1 kHz. Disk laser elements experience weaker thermal distortions caused by longitudinal temperature gradient.
