Abstract
Yb-doped laser glasses are commonly known as feasible gain material in high energy ultrashort pulse laser systems due to their long excited state lifetime, broad emission bandwidth and straightforward volume scalability. In contrast to phosphate and fluoride-phosphate glasses pure fused silica shows a high thermal stress resistance. With the development of the powder sinter technology (REPUSIL) Yb-doped fused silica can be produced with scalable size [1]. First lasing experiments show an excellent optical quality, high efficiency and a broad amplification bandwidth [2]. Here we report to our knowledge the first short pulse generation experiment in bulk volume Yb-doped fused silica utilizing a Q-switched cavity.
