Abstract
High power short pulsed lasers have become widely used for micro-machining, providing high precision and high quality, but the lack of truly flexible beam delivery systems limits applications (in general) to relatively small planar components. To address this, various designs of microstructured fibres have been developed and tested in recent years, with both Hollow-Core Photonic Crystal Fibres (HC-PCFs) [1] and large mode area solid core fibres providing partial solutions (for wavelengths around 1m, pulse lengths of tens of ns, and pulse energies of up to 1 mJ). In each case they can overcome power delivery limitations due to nonlinear effects and damage threshold dominant in conventional solid core silica fibres.
