Abstract

Crystal Raman lasers offer a possibility to build robust coherent light sources at new specific wavelengths for applications across many fields of science and technology. To date, the clear majority of studies have been based on pump lasers which are multi-longitudinal mode such as standing-wave cavity Nd and Yb lasers [1]. In such cases the Raman laser spectrum is also multimode with broadening contributions from the pump laser and the Raman gain spectrum. However, there are important applications for single longitudinal mode (SLM) laser output such as atom cooling, spectroscopy and coherent sensing. To our knowledge, there have been no detailed studies reported into SLM crystal Raman lasers and it remains an open question whether efficient devices are feasible.
