Abstract

Fiber optical parametric amplifiers (FOPA) have attracted growing attention during the last few years due to their promising capabilities to provide large gain as well as broad-band amplification [1]. Having a broad band and adjustable spectrum makes FOPA an ideal amplifier for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) communication systems. Parametric amplification is based on the four wave mixing process occurring in a highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF). Previous publications pointed out that the nonlinear cross-talk in WDM transmission systems caused by a FOPA can result in serious performance degradations [2], [3]. Various techniques such as increasing the pump power [3] and polarization management [4] are proposed to reduce the cross-talk caused by FOPA. In this paper we propose a new technique based on optical phase conjugation. Optical phase conjugation is a well known technique which can be used in multi-span transmission links to decrease the nonlinear cross-talk caused by transmission fibers [5]. We propose to use this method in the structure of FOPA.
