High speed, high performance all-optical information processing utilizing nonlinear optical transients

Abstract

Recently, a new approach to all-optical information processing has been introduced: instead of relying on binary logic operations, information is processed via linear combination of optically induced nonlinear transient states. Utilising time multiplexing, a complex and recurrent network of nonlinear nodes is formed utilizing a single telecommunication laser diode. Using this complex network, we implement a machine learning scheme. Information is injected with ~1 gigabyte per second. In our experiments, we demonstrate high performance, parallel and energy efficient all optical information processing.
